Essay Coaching Process (Supported drafting & writing)

  1. Brainstorming: All essays begin with a brainstorming session to determine student’s unique needs, perspectives, strengths, and goals. We’ll work online via Zoom or Facetime (30-60 minutes), or we can work asynchronously via Google Docs — whatever the student prefers. The goal of the brainstorming session is to identify a topic and outline an approach to the first draft. We’ll also consider other supplemental essays required for a college and map a strategy that balances content among them.
  2. Drafting: Then the student writes a first draft and shares it with the coach for feedback. The coach will give detailed edits and suggestions using Google Docs editing features.
  3. Revising: Student revises the draft based on the suggestions and shares a second draft for further feedback. This process continues until the coach determines the draft is complete, and the student feels like the essay (or activities list/resume) accurately captures their ideas.
  4. Polishing: Essays are usually completed within 2-3 revision cycles, completely proofread, polished, and ready to submit to the college’s application portal.

Targeted Review Process (For independently-drafted essays)

  1. Email your draft (Google doc link) to juliebrowncasey@gmail.com along with any specific questions or requests you have about the draft. You can combine multiple essays within a single document.
  2. Julie will email you with an estimated turn-around time, which is usually within 24-48 hours.
  3. If you agree to the time estimate, then the review will proceed. Julie will email you when the review is complete, along with the total time for the review (as time-stamped in the Google document).
  4. Payment is due upon completion.

UPDATE: 10/22/25: Our client essay coaching roster is full! While we aren’t available for brainstorming consultations or application-mapping strategy sessions, we can still offer targeted reviews of your independently-completed essays & resumes. Reviews are completed in Google docs, with revisions time-stamped. Payment is due upon completion.

The hourly rate for each live coaching session is $90/hour, pro-rated. Essay editing and targeted review services are $60/hour, pro-rated. Venmo is the preferred payment method, but Zelle and PayPal are also available.
